Srinagar, Oct 10: Upper reaches of Kashmir received season first snowfall on Sunday while rains lashed plains in Kashmir.

As per MeT officials light snow was recorded in higher reaches of Gulmarg, Gurez, and Sonamarg on Sunday evening.

"Around 2 inches of fresh snow has been recorded in Kangamdori Gulmarg and other upper reaches of Kashmir," he said.

Earlier, in the day, Deputy Director MeT Srinagar, Mukhtar Ahmad told Rising Kashmir that plains in Kashmir received rains while upper reaches are expected to receive light snowfall on Sunday night.

“As expected a feeble Western Disturbances has approached J&K on October 10th. Under its influence, light rain over plains of North-Western parts of Kashmir valley (Tangdar, Kupwara, Handwara, Bandipora, Uri,  Baramulla, and central Kashmir) and Poonch district and adjoining areas of Jammu Division is occurring as per current  radar and satellite images.

“There is a possibility of light snow over higher reaches of Gulmarg, Gurez, and Tulail area of Bandipora dist, Sonamarg, and Drass during next 4-6 hours. Moderate gusty winds with thunder and lightning over these places are also expected,” he said.

On Sunday, Srinagar witnessed a sharp dip in the temperatures and a recorded a maximum of 24.4 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg recorded 15.8 degrees maximum temperature and Pahalgam 23.0 degrees Celsius.

As per the traffic police advisory for Monday, subject to fair weather and better road conditions, LMVs(passengers) shall be allowed from both sides on the Jammu-Srinagar highway and vice-versa. TCU Jammu, Srinagar shall liaise with TCU Ramban before releasing the traffic.

On Mughal road, subject to fair weather and good road condition, LMVs from both sides and  HMVs (up to twelve tyres) from Srinagar towards Poonch shall be allowed on Mughal road. LMVs from Behramgalla 0800 hrs upto 1500 hrs.,  from Herpora 0800 hrs upto 1600 hrs & HMVs from Herpora 0900 hrs. upto 1500 hrs, reads the traffic advisory.
