No forecast of major snowfall for next 2 weeks: MeT



Srinagar records season's coldest night so far

Srinagar: The Meteorological Department (MeT) on Monday said that “there will be mainly dry weather till end of this month even as there were meager chances of light snowfall over extreme north Kashmir on January 25”.

“Weather is most likely to remain cold and dry till the end of November in the whole J&K. However, there's a 40-50% chance of very light snowfall over extreme North Kashmir on November 25,” Director MeT, Sonam Lotus said in a forecast issued here. “Overall, there's no forecast of any major weather for the next two weeks,” Lotus said.


The temperatures below-freezing point continued unabated in Kashmir as the summer capital Srinagar, experienced the coldest night of the season with temperature dropping as low as minus 1.6 degrees Celsius during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday, said MeT data.

The minimum temperature in Srinagar was minus 1.7 degrees Celsius below normal for this time of the year and surpassed the previous low of minus 1.5 degrees Celsius recorded a couple of days ago. Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 2 degrees Celsius against minus 2.2 degrees Celsius recorded on Sunday night, MeT official said.

It was minus 2 degrees Celsius below normal for the place, the official said. Pahalgam in south Kashmir recorded a low of minus 3.7 degrees Celsius compared to minus 4.2 degrees Celsius on Saturday night and it remained the coldest place across J&K. Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 1.3 degrees Celsius against minus 1.3 degrees Celsius on Saturday night and normal of 0.6 degree Celsius, the MeT official said.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 2.9 degrees Celsius on Sunday night, against minus 3 degrees Celsius on Saturday night, the MeT official said.
