Srinagar: The School Education Department is mulling to start an exhaustive exercise to verify the degree certificates of the teaching faculty of the department.

The move comes in the wake of a large number of complaints to the department regarding the fake certificates obtained by in-service teachers, masters, and lecturers.

An official said that the fake certificates had been produced by the candidates at the time of recruitment while some managed to get such certificates for their promotions and other service benefits.

“I am receiving a lot of complaints every day about the fake certificates obtained by the teachers, masters, and lecturers working in the department. We have decided to verify everyone’s certificates,” Principal Secretary School Education Department, Bishwajit Kumar Singh told Greater Kashmir.

“The certificates get verified at the time of recruitment but we want to verify these certificates once more,” he said.

Earlier, the Directorate of School Education Kashmir (DSEK) terminated a teacher Amit Kachroo from services after it found that he got his job after producing a fake degree certificate.

Kachroo was appointed under the Prime Minister’s Package.

The termination order issued by the DSEK said that the Chief Education Officer (CEO) reported that the marks certificate of BA III Year of the appointee was re-verified from the Jammu University by the Drawing and Disbursing Officer and was found fake.

“Such cases raise apprehensions that there must be other people who managed to get their jobs by producing fake degree certificates. So, we are planning to start a major drive to get the certificates verified,” Singh said.

This would be for the third time when certificates of in-service teaching employees would be verified for authentication.

The School Education Department in August 2015 ordered departmental verification of the degrees of Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) teachers to crosscheck credentials of ReTs and RReTs who submitted their degree certificates to the department at the time of recruitment.

In 2018, the department again verified degree certificates of the erstwhile SSA teachers after the government ordered their absorption as Grade II and Grade III teachers in the department.

“But this time the department will verify the degree certificates of all teachers to ascertain the authenticity of the degrees obtained by these teachers,” Singh said.

He said that some teachers had produced degree certificates awarded by Nagaland University and other similar institutions and were working in the department for many years.

“The verification process will set things right and bring transparency,” Singh said.
