Class 10th students complain of ‘tough’ Math paper, demand grace marks

Srinagar: After appearing in the examination of Mathematics subject, the class 10th students Monday complained that the question paper framed by the J&K Board of School Education (BOSE) was “tough” keeping in mind the standard of 10th standard students.

The students complained to Greater Kashmir that the questions in the Mathematics paper were not “as per the given standard” and demanded grace marks be given to them.

“As soon as we were given the question paper, we were surprised to see some questions of standard higher than 10th class and majority of the students couldn’t attempt these questions,” the students complained.

They questioned the selection of paper setters by BOSE saying that every time during the exams, students are subjected to mental stress.

“Every year students are subjected to mental stress due to improper selection of paper setter by the BOSE. It ultimately tells upon the performance of the students in the examination,” another student said.

They accused the BOSE of not holding hassle-free exams for the convenience of the students.

“Not only students but even the invigilators were also surprised to see such question paper framed for the students,” the students said.

Earlier, the class 12th students complained of a “tough” physics paper on November 16.

Chairperson BOSE Veena Pandita told Greater Kashmir that a committee would be constituted to look into the complaints of the students and seek their recommendations as well.

“If I formally receive any complaint or grievance from the students, I will refer the case to the committee for their recommendations,” Pandita said. “Keeping in view the interest of the students, we will take a student-friendly decision in this regard.”

Meanwhile, a top official in BOSE said that they ultimately give grace marks to the students in any subject which has poor results compared to other subjects.

“Last time the committee stated that the class 12th physics paper was of a high standard or out of syllabus. And later we decided to give grace marks to the students,” the BOSE official said.

He said a similar process would be adopted for the class 10th mathematics paper.

“After evaluation of question paper, if it is felt that students have not performed well, we will award grace marks to the students to improve the result,” the official said.
