Srinagar: Social Activists on Tuesday celebrated the arrival of ‘Chilai-e-Kalan’ by celebrating the day as ‘Kashmir Pheran Day’.

A group of social activists assembled in the heart of city centre Lal Chowk and appealed government to allow local and non-local employees to wear pheran – a traditional long coat or cloak worn by both men and women at civil secretariat and other departments.

While talking to Kashmir News Trust social activist, Pir Imtiyaz Hussain said that pheran is a traditional dress of Kashmir and it should be preserved and used during cold season. He said pheran is a gift to the people of Kashmir from spiritual leader Mir Syed Ali Hamadani (RA).

“It protects us from severe cold while kangri underneath it keeps us warm. We request government to allow employees to use it during duty hours,” he said.

Another social activist Dr Mehar said that they should not forget their culture and tradition even if there is so much modernization.

“Pheran is our traditional dress and we should take pride in it. We should preserve our culture and tradition in this age of science and technology,” she said. (KNT)
