Srinagar, Dec 28 : Isolated parts of Kashmir on Monday received light to moderate snowfall and rains while the Meteorological Department has predicted significant improvement in prevailing weather conditions from Tuesday onward.

Director MeT, Srinagar Centre, Sonam Lotus told Rising Kashmir that on Tuesday weather will remain generally cloudy in Kashmir region with chances of light snow over higher reaches. 

There is no forecast of any major snowfall till ending December, he said.

“ We are expecting significant improvement in prevailing weather conditions from Tuesday,” he said, adding there will be more fall in night temperatures and rise in day temperatures.

As per data shared by MeT data, ski-resort Gulmarg in Baramulla recorded fresh snowfall of 2-4 inches of a fresh snowfall, Machil 3 inches, Sonamarg 5 inches, Yousmarg 3 inches, Sinton Top 2 inches, Minimarg 5 inches, Sadhna Top, 2 inches, Zojila Pass 5 inches, and Drass also received light snowfall till Monday evening.

Meanwhile, the minimum temperature rose across Kashmir and settled above the freezing point at most places of the valley on Sunday night.

Srinagar recorded a low of 2.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday night, Pahalgam, recorded a low of minus 4.1 degrees Celsius. Gulmarg recorded minus 6.0 degrees Celsius.

The 40 days of Chillai Kalan began on Monday and it will be followed by 20 days of Chillai Khurd, which translates to small cold, and 10 days of Chili-Bach (literally, baby cold). 

This year, minimum temperatures plummeted to -6.5 degrees Celsius in Srinagar on Dec 18.

As per the traffic department advisory, LMVs (Passenger) shall be allowed from both sides on Jammu-Srinagar NHW viz Jammu towards Srinagar and vice-versa. 

TCU Jammu/Srinagar shall liaise with TCU Ramban before releasing the traffic.


Following the fresh snowfall along historic Mughal road, no traffic will be allowed from both sides of the highway on Tuesday.
