GDC Sogam Marks 'World Arbor Day' in Unison With SF Division Kupwara


Plantation Drive, Essay & Painting Competitions Held


Kupwara, Mar 24 : In commemoration of World Arbor Day, Government Degree College Sogam in unison with Social Forestry Division Kupwara on Thursday marked the day by conducting a plantation drive besides essay and painting competitions. The competitions were organized by NSS Unit and Department of Environmental Science, Govt. Degree College Sogam (Lolab), Kupwara, in the college campus.

Prof. Muhammad Shafi Lone (Principal, GDC, Sogam) graced the occasion as Chief Guest followed by the organizers Prof. Qaiser Bashir (AP, EVS; NSS Officer), Dr Tauseef Ahmad Parray (Convener, Debates & Seminar Committee/ D&SC), Prof. Sajad Ahmad and Prof. Ishfaq Hussain (co-convener and member, D&SC, respectively).

" The aim of the plantation Drive is to plant more and more trees which is very effective for the environment and it protects environment from different hazards.Planting more and more plant's is need of the hour as world is gripping in various hazards and when we take utmost care of trees it can make our environment fresh from different ailments", Principal GDC Sogam Mohd Shafi said on the occasion. 

" Planting more trees curbs pollution, protects us from soil erosion, floods and landslides. These trees are very useful to us as they save our environment. Making air and atmosphere fresh and clean, these trees play a vital role. We should plant more trees", he said.

The theme of the Essay Competition was Forests and Sustainable Production and Consumption, in which seven (07) students from GDC Sogam and higher secondary schools of Sogam and Chandigam participated. The essays were evaluated by a two member jury including Dr. Musharraf Rahman (Sr. Assistant Professor, Zoology) and Prof. Ishfaq Hussain Bhat (AP, English).The first three positions were bagged, respectively, by Mir Shaika (GHSS, Sogam), Danish Fayaz Tantray (3rd Sem/ GDC Sogam) and Muneer Altaf (BHSS, Sogam).

The theme of the Painting Competition was Burning Environmental Issues, in which five (05) students from GDC Sogam and higher secondary schools of Sogam and Chandigam participated. The paintings were evaluated by a four member jury including Mr Sajid Mahboob (Range Officer, SFD-K), Syed Gh. Jeelani (SFD-K), Prof. Qaiser Bashir (AP, EVS) and Dr Tauseef Ahmad Parray (AP, Islamic Studies). The first three positions were bagged, respectively, by Nazakat Ahmad (BHSS, Sogam), Darkshan Majeed (GHSS, Sogam) and Naziya Majeed (GHSS, Sogam).

These two events were followed by a mass Plantation Drive in the college campus in which all the staff members, students and employees of SFD-K participated. The dignitaries who graced the event included Mr Aijaz Ahmad Bhat (SDM, Lolab), Dr Fayaz Ahmad Bhat (DFO, SFD-K), Mr Inam Ul Haq (Tehsildar, Sogam),Range Officer SFC Sajid Mehboob and other officers/ officials of SFD-K. On this occasion, Botanical Garden of the College was also inaugurated.

The Event concluded with a valedictory session (jointly conducted by Prof. Qaiser Bashir and Prof. Sajad Ahmad) in which the toppers of both categories were given trophies by SFD-K in presence of (the above mentioned) dignitaries. On this occasion, SFD-K presented Award of Excellence to Prof. M Shafi Lone (Principal, GDC Sogam) for his contribution towards overall development of the College and for green campus initiatives. The event was attended by 100s of students, including NSS volunteers, faculty members of the College and the officers/ officials of SFD-K. (Kashmir Glory News)
