Srinagar, March 08 : Amid forecast for cloudy but mainly dry weather, night temperature recorded a drop in Jammu and Kashmir with mercury settling below sub-zero in famous resorts of Gulmarg and Pahalgam on Tuesday.   

A meteorological department told GNS that upper reaches received snowfall with Gulmarg receiving 10 centimeters of it in 24 hours till 0830 hours today. The snowfall has stopped now and there is mainly cloudy weather, the official said. The activity was mainly on yesterday as plains received rains with Srinagar recording 4.3mm during the time along with 2.4mm in Qazigund, 5.2mm in Pahalgam, 8.6mm in Kupwara and 1.4mm in Kokernag.       

The official told GNS that Srinagar, the summer capital of J&K, recorded a low of 5.4°C against last night’s 7.0°C on the previous night.

Qazigund, the gateway town of Kashmir, recorded a low of 5.5°C against 6.7°C on the previous night, he said.

Kokernag, also in south Kashmir, had a low of 2.6°C against 5.7°C on the previous night, the official said.

Pahalgam, the famous resort in south Kashmir, recorded a low of minus 2.2°C against 2.6°C last night, he said.

Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 4.5°C against minus 1.6°C on the previous night, he said.

The temperature was 1.0°C below normal for this time of the year in the famous resort, he said.

Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded a low of 3.4°C against 4.6°C on the previous night, the official said.

Jammu recorded a low of 12.7°C against 14.8°C on the previous night, the official said. The temperature was 1.3°C below normal for the J&K’s winter capital during this time of the year, he said.

Banihal recorded a low of 5.2°C, Batote had a minimum of 6.2°C while Bhaderwah recorded a low of 4.6°C, the official said.

Ladakh’s Leh recorded a minimum of minus 2.4°C against last night minus 0.4°C on the previous night while automatic Kargil station recorded a low of minus 8.4°C. in Next 24 hours, the weatherman said mainly dry weather was expected over Jammu and Kashmir.

“ Weather is likely to remain partly cloudy with chances of occasional light rain/snow (over higher reaches) till March 13.” However, he said, there's no forecast of any “significant weather” till March 13. (GNS)
