Incarcerated youth from Sopore clears LLM entrance exam, family appeals for his release

Feroz Ahmed Dar, a 28-year-old youth who is languishing in jail for almost 10 years has qualified the University of Kashmir’s entrance examination for masters of law (LLM), with his family appealing authorities for his release.

His family told news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), that their son has been in jail for the last 10 years and is currently languishing in central jail Srinagar.

“My son was lodged in the central jail in Baramulla, when he completed his B.Sc degree in 2016 and simultaneously a diploma in Human Rights via IGNOU followed by a LLB degree from the department of Law in the University of Kashmir in 2020. Now he has qualified masters in LLM,” Dar’s father said.

“Though it’s heart-breaking, our son is behind the bars since a long time. But at the same time we are happy because despite all odds Feroz is not giving up on his studies,” said the family members.

They said that Feroz was released on parole twice since his arrest.

He was once released on 11 July, 2020 and then on 15 March in 2021 for one and a half month.

“Feroz is already on medication as he has a spine problem,” his father said.

“We have been moving from the pillar to post to get our son released to no avail,” he said appealing PM Modi, Home Minister and J&K’s LG to show some mercy on their son and release him keeping in view his good behaviour.

Meanwhile, Superintendent Central Jail Srinagar Daljit Singh told KNO that they have a good number of inmates who are well qualified and have cracked various exams.

He said he can give details about Dar during day only.

Dar, according to the police, had shot dead Suhail Ahmad Sofi son of Ghulam Nabi Sofi of Doabgah, Sopore inside a mosque on March 19, 2013 at the behest of Fahadullah LeT’s top commander who was arrested on April 17, 2013 in a case FIR no 48/2013 U/S 302 RPC, 7/27 arms act of Police Station Sopore against Dar and the co-accused Fahadullah who provided him the pistol to kill Sofi.

He was arrested along with two others, four days after Fahadulla’s arrest revealed his involvement in the crime, police said. Adding that the arms and ammunition were recovered from their possession.
