MeT Predicts Snowfall In Kashmir, Western disturbance expected to hit valley


Srinagar : The Meteorological Department has predicted rain and fresh snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir from January 8.

An official from MeT department said, “As of today, weather most likely to remain mainly dry and cold in Jammu and Kashmir till January 7. Thereafter a spell of light to moderate snowfall is likely during January 8 and January 9 at many places of Kashmir and rain in Jammu.”

The ongoing 40-day long period of harsh winter cold known locally as the ‘Chillai Kalan’ will end on January 31.

Pahalgam in south Kashmir was the coldest place in the Valley where minimum temperature was minus 9.4 degrees celsius.

Srinagar, the summer capital of the J&K recorded a low of minus 5.2 while the mercury in Qazigund in south Kashmir settled at a low of minus 5.2 degrees Celsius.

The minimum night temperature at Gulmarg famous tourist-resort in north Kashmir settled at a low of minus 8.4 degrees Celsius.

Kokernag town recorded a low of minus 3.8 degrees Celsius while Kupwara town in north Kashmir registered a low of minus 6.0 degrees Celsius last night.

Jammu city recorded 4.5 degrees Celsius, Katra town 4.9, Batote 2.0, Banihal minus 2.4 and Bhaderwah minus 1.2 as the minimum temperatures.(KL)
