NET, SET or SLET mandatory for direct recruitment of Assistant Professors for all higher education institutions: UGC

The UGC has announced that the NET, SET, and SLET will now be the minimum criteria for recruiting Assistant Professors in higher education institutions. The Ph.D. qualification will be optional from July 2023.


The University Grants Commission (UGC) has announced that the National Eligibility Test (NET), State Eligibility Test (SET) and State Level Eligibility Test (SLET) shall be the minimum criteria for the direct recruitment to the post of Assistant Professor for all higher education institutions.

In a Gazette Notification dated 30 June, UGC said that amendments have been made in the ‘University Grants Commission (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and other Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) Regulations, 2018.’

As per UGC, These regulations may now be called the ‘University Grants Commission (Minimum Qualifications for Appointment of Teachers and other Academic Staff in Universities and Colleges and other Measures for the Maintenance of Standards in Higher Education) (2nd Amendment) Regulations, 2023.'

As per the notification, Ph.D. qualification for appointment as an Assistant Professor would be optional from 01 July 2023. The notification further stated that the mentioned changes will be effective from 1 July, 2023.

Earlier in 2021, UGC had announced that PhD was not mandatory for direct recruitment of Assistant Professors till July 2023. The commission said it has extended the date of applicability of PhD as a mandatory qualification for recruitment of Assistant Professors in Departments of Universities from 1st July 2021 to 1st July 2023.

Meanwhile, the National Testing Agency (NTA) is planning to start answer key challenge for the University Grants Commission National Eligibility Test (UGC) NET 2023 today or tomorrow i.e. on 5 or 6 July. The announcement was made by UGC chief M Jagadesh Kumar on Twitter. The Chairman further announced that the final results of the UGC NET exams will be out in the second week of August. UGC-NET is being conducted by the NTA in Computer Based Test (CBT) mode since December 2018 onwards. UGC NET exams are held twice a year, one in December and other in June. UGC-NET is a test to determine the eligibility of Indian nationals for 'Assistant Professor' and 'Junior Research Fellowship and Assistant Professor' in Indian universities and colleges. (Agencies)
