J&K Weather Forecast: Heavy Snowfall Expected, 5-Day Wet Spell Begins Today

Weather Forecast:
  • According to the Director of the Meteorological Department (MeT), Dr. Mukhtar Ahmad, light to moderate snowfall is expected from February 17th to 20th.
  • Middle and higher reaches of various districts, including Kupwara, Baramulla, and Budgam, could experience heavy to very heavy snowfall on February 19th and 20th.
  • The advisory warns of possible road closures on important passes like Sinthan Pass and Mughal Road, so travelers are advised to plan their journeys accordingly.

Preparation and Response:
  • The Mechanical Engineering Department (MED) Kashmir is fully prepared for snow clearance, with a mock drill already conducted and all men and machinery on standby.
  • Around 300 machines are stationed across the valley, with over 40 machines dedicated to snow clearance in district Srinagar alone.
  • Divisional Commissioner Kashmir has directed all departments to mobilize resources and ensure a prompt response to any emergency situations arising from the snowfall.

Advisories and Recommendations:
  • Farmers are advised to withhold irrigation and fertilizer application during the snowfall period, and travelers are urged to exercise caution.
  • To minimize road damage during snow clearance, high-tech snow clearance machines with plastic cartilage snow blades have been procured.
