64 Government Colleges in Jammu and Kashmir Granted Exemption from CUET Admissions: Addressing Low Student Enrolment Challenges

Higher Edu Deptt exempts 64 GDCs from making admissions through CUET score; ‘Students prefer not to seek admission through the CUET mode keeping in view their geographical locations, topography and availability of the infrastructure’

In response to low student enrolment in Government Degree Colleges (GDCs) across Jammu and Kashmir, the Higher Education Department has taken significant steps to address the issue. Here's everything you need to know about the recent exemption of 64 GDCs from CUET admissions for the academic session 2024-25.

Understanding the Situation:

Low CUET Admissions:

The Common University Entrance Test (CUET) based admissions witnessed a decline in several degree colleges across Jammu and Kashmir. Many students expressed reluctance to opt for CUET-based admissions due to various factors such as geographical locations, topography, and infrastructure availability.

Exemption Decision:

Responding to the concerns raised by low CUET admissions, the Higher Education Department exempted 64 Government Degree Colleges from making admissions through CUET scores for the academic session 2024-25. This exemption applies to 35 government colleges in Jammu division and 29 colleges in the Kashmir region.

Reasoning Behind the Decision:

The decision to exempt certain colleges from CUET admissions was made after thorough discussions with stakeholders. Factors such as geographical locations, topography, and infrastructure availability were considered, especially in colleges where CUET-based admissions were notably low during the previous academic year.

Implications of CUET-2024:

CUET-2024 is scheduled to take place from May 15 to May 31, 2024, across thirteen mediums in India. However, the Higher Education Department observed that CUET-based admissions in remote colleges located in areas like Marwah, Tangdhar, Gurez, and Mahore placed students at a disadvantage.

Admissions Process:

Admissions in the exempted colleges will be conducted centrally through the e-SAMARTH portal based on 12th class marks. This streamlined process aims to facilitate smoother admissions for aspiring students belonging to Jammu and Kashmir divisions.

The exemption of Government Degree Colleges from CUET admissions marks a significant step towards addressing concerns related to low student enrolment. By prioritizing accessibility and fairness in the admissions process, the Higher Education Department ensures equal opportunities for students across diverse geographical locations in Jammu and Kashmir.
