NTA to reconduct UGC-NET for English, Sociology, Commerce papers as audit finds factual, translation errors
The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced a re-examination for English, Commerce and Sociology papers under the UGC-NET June 2026 examination.
The decision follows complaints regarding multiple errors in the question papers. According to the NTA notice, a committee examined the complaints and identified factual, typographical and translation-related errors, along with other issues affecting the quality of the three papers.
To ensure a fair and error-free examination, NTA has decided to re-conduct the three papers in September 2026.
UGC NET June 2026 Re-Exam: Important Dates
The re-examination will be conducted according to the following schedule:
- English: September 9, 2026 — Shift 1, 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon
- Commerce: September 9, 2026 — Shift 2, 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM
- Sociology: September 10, 2026 — Shift 1, 9:00 AM to 12:00 Noon
The examination city, examination centre and admit card details for the re-examination will be notified separately by NTA through its official website.
Why Is UGC NET June 2026 Being Re-Conducted?
NTA received several complaints concerning the English, Commerce and Sociology question papers.
Following the complaints, NTA constituted a committee to examine the issues. The committee reportedly found several defects, including:
- Factual errors
- Typographical errors
- Translation errors
- Misspelled names of scholars
- Errors in book titles
- Problems in the wording of questions
- Grammatical errors
- Gender and number agreement errors
- Punctuation-related errors
- Non-standard terms for established concepts
- Repetition of a significant number of previously administered questions
The committee recommended that the three papers be re-conducted in the interest of maintaining a fair and error-free examination.
NTA has stated that the extent of the defects could not be adequately addressed merely by dropping questions after the answer-key challenge process.
