Anantnag, Dec 21: Chillai Kalan is a term used in Kashmir to describe the harshest and coldest part of winter. It lasts for 40 days, starting from December 21 and ending on January 31.

During this period, temperatures in the region drop significantly, often plunging below freezing, especially at night.

Key features of Chillai Kalan include:

Severe Cold: It is marked by bone-chilling cold with frequent snowfall, particularly in the Kashmir Valley.

Frozen Water Bodies: Lakes like the famous Dal Lake often freeze, making it a spectacle for both locals and tourists.

Impact on Daily Life: People depend heavily on traditional heating methods like Kangri (earthen fire pot) and warm clothing.

Agricultural Importance: Despite its harshness, the snow during this time is vital as it helps replenish water sources, benefiting agriculture in the region.

Chillai Kalan is followed by Chillai Khurd (20 days of less severe cold) and Chillai Bachha (10 days of milder cold), marking a gradual transition to spring. (JKSA)
